Drawing & Sketching in Pen and Ink

During the Renaissance and Baroque periods well-known artists used fine quill pens and reed pens to create exquisite studies of landscapes, people, and occasionally architecture. Such studies were done in black and brown ink and wash, and were often a prerequisite to a larger piece of art work. By the early 19th century, the manufacture of steel pens made the process of rendering in pen and ink much easier for artists and students.

Because the use of pen and ink is limited in its ability to create large variations of tonal values, pen and ink drawings are usually small in size. The building of up delicate tones instead is created by using hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling. In this three-session class, art students will use these techniques to render form in simple objects in nature and architecture. Exploring the possibilities of working in pen and ink will prove to be an exciting experience of this almost lost art medium.

Early exploratory works were from travels to Arizona, California and Hawaii; now his subject matter gravitates to the historical beauty of New York and New England. Skill in classical drawing and composition shows in his seascapes, landscapes and architectural themes. Inspiration comes to him from the study of the boundless splendor and order of nature. Combining his training in art and architecture, he is best known for his attention to fine detail. Mark's work has been seen in various exhibitions in Westchester County and on Long Island. Commissioned work includes historical Rye Presbyterian Church, scenes of Long Island Sound and many private homes in Westchester and surrounding areas.
