Drawing and Sketching in Charcoal

Instructor: Mark A. Cassata, B.F.A., M.A.T., markcassataart@gmail.com
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Charcoal is one of the oldest and most popular drawing mediums. Its smooth, often soft, texture lends itself well to quick gesture and subtle gradations. It is a useful and versatile drawing tool, making it ideal for the beginning student.
The "Fundamentals of Charcoal" workshop will provide the opportunity to explore the expressive quality of the charcoal medium in both pencil and stick form. Students will choose from still-life or the human form to create line, blend tone, and render light and dark values.

| Instructor Bio: | Born and raised in Rye, New York, Mark Cassata has been an artist his entire life. His training began at an early age with his father, who was a European-trained portrait artist. Earning his B.F.A. and M.A.T. from Manhattanville College, Mark has been a professor of fine art since 1983. As a faculty member at Pace University and as a guest lecturer for many organizations, his areas of expertise are drawing, painting, art history and architectural drawing. Mark began to take commissions while still finishing his degrees. Early exploratory works were from travels to Arizona, California and Hawaii; now his subject matter gravitates to the historical beauty of New York and New England. Skill in classical drawing and composition shows in his seascapes, landscapes and architectural themes. Inspiration comes to him from the study of the boundless splendor and order of nature. Combining his training in art and architecture, he is best known for his attention to fine detail. Mark's work has been seen in various exhibitions in Westchester County and on Long Island. Commissioned work includes historical Rye Presbyterian Church, scenes of Long Island Sound and many private homes in Westchester and surrounding areas. |
