Drawing and Sketching in Pencil

Instructor: Mark A. Cassata, B.F.A., M.A.T., markcassataart@gmail.com

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Drawing in pencil only became popular after 1795, when Frenchman, Nicolas Conte manufactured the first wooden-barreled graphite pencil. The invention of smooth graphite rods inserted into an easily held wooden pencil shaft made the packing of drawing tools for any event more convenient. Today, developing good pencil skills is of great value to the artist and art student.

This four-week class is designed to provide essential drawing and sketching skills for both the beginner and advanced artist. Techniques will include drawing in outline, light and shade, hatching, graded tones, perspective, and composition. Drawing sessions may include working from a still-life of objects, using photos of landscapes or small buildings, or simply emulating a master work. The traditional representation of objects and scenes will be emphasized to increase one’s power of observation and retention, and, of course, patience.
